Trump Questions Harris’ Racial Identity: “Is She Black or Indian?

Trump Questions Harris’ Racial Identity: Claims She Recently “Turned Black”

At the National Association of Black Journalists convention in Chicago, Donald Trump made controversial remarks questioning Vice President Kamala Harris’ racial identity. Trump claimed that Harris had only recently begun identifying as Black, saying, “I didn’t know she was Black until a number of years ago when she happened to turn Black and now she wants to be known as Black.” He further questioned, “So I don’t know – Is she Indian? Or is she Black?”

Harris responded by calling Trump’s comments divisive and disrespectful, stating, “The American people deserve better.” She emphasized the importance of unity and strength through diversity at a meeting of the historically Black sorority Sigma Gamma Rho in Houston.

Harris, who has Indian and Jamaican heritage, is the first Black and Asian-American Vice President. She attended Howard University, a historically Black university, and is a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority and the Congressional Black Caucus.

Trump’s comments sparked a heated exchange with ABC News’ Rachel Scott. Trump dismissed questions about whether Harris was a “DEI hire” with uncertainty, saying, “I really don’t know, could be.”

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre criticized Trump’s remarks, asserting that no one has the right to dictate another person’s identity. Representative Ritchie Torres of New York labeled Trump a “relic of a racist past,” referring to his history of racially charged attacks.

Trump also questioned Harris’ legal credentials, claiming she failed her bar exam, though Harris graduated from the University of California Hastings College of Law in 1989, passing on her second attempt.

The convention discussion, marked by contentious exchanges between Trump and Scott, concluded with Trump criticizing the event as “rude and nasty” on his social media platform.
