Switzerland is sending emergency aid to Turkey and Syria after two powerful earthquakes and several smaller aftershocks devastated vast areas.

The government of the two countries expressed their condolences.

The first teams, consisting of more than 100 people and 14 search and rescue dogs, have already landed in Turkey.

The planes also carry 18 tons of ambulances.

It is now estimated that around 4,500 people have been killed and tens of thousands left homeless in the bitterly cold weather.
