The £500,000 project, which opened earlier this year, saw the red blaze pitches at the back of the school removed and replaced with a new dedicated sports pitch.

It has a three-court arena surrounded by a 200-meter running track with five lanes and two 70-meter sprint straights.

Delegates from British Athletics and Scottish Athletics visited the site last Wednesday (September 28)

Ed Hunt, UK Athletics facilities manager, said: “The 200m mini track at St Maurice’s is a great example of innovation and an ideal model for school and community use. It is a truly inspiring environment and a brilliant facility; we would like to see many developments like this across the UK.”

Two basketball courts are built to NBA specifications. The second field will be for handball, hockey and football. The overall project also includes a new grass soccer field.

Councilor Angela Campbell, Head of Education, Families and Children, said: “It was great to welcome Great Britain Athletics to North Lanarkshire Council to highlight our approach to creating new multi-use sports facilities for school and community use.

“The St Maurice’s development is just one of a number of projects we are planning, including Woodlands in Cumbernauld and Kilsyth Primary.
