The next day for the tourism industry of Greece can only focus on sustainability and environmentally friendly practices it will reduce the country’s environmental footprint, Greek Tourism Minister Vassilis Kikilios said during the My Green Mobility 2022 forum in Athens this week.

The goal, Kikilios said, was “to implement a sustainable development model that preserves the authenticity and unique characteristics of every corner of Greece.”

At the same time, reflecting the importance the ministry attaches to the green transition of the sector, the Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO) will launch a new campaign with environmental protection, smart mobility, reducing gas emissions, reducing the use of plastics, as main topics. More details about the campaign will be announced soon, he said.

“Greece is a leader in accelerating the green transition, made possible by innovative policies, an appropriate institutional framework and partnerships between the public and private sectors,” he said, citing three ground-breaking initiatives: Astypalea e-mobility projectlaunch of Art GR-eco islands in Halki and the Tilos project.

Implementation of a “greener” policy, investments in the circular economy and digital transformation, improvement of infrastructure projects are the next steps for the development of the “Greece Brand”, he said.

Kikilios stressed the importance of moving to a sustainable tourism development model, which he said would create quality jobs, generate income, attract investors and lay the foundations for a better future for generations to come.

“At this critical moment around the world, moving to policies with well-defined sustainable characteristics is the only way forward. And these efforts concern all of us,” he said.
