Three-time champion Andy Murray lost in straight sets in the first round of the National Bank Open as British men’s No. 1 Cameron Norrie advanced.

Murray, who won the tournament in 2015 after previous wins in 2009 and 2010, finally got going against American Taylor Fritz in a match on Tuesday night after they were postponed a day earlier due to rain in Montreal.

The Scotsman was stunned by the power of the 10th seed in the first set before fighting back strongly in the second, his frustration getting the better of him as he smashed his racket on the court several times.

In the end, Fritz proved too strong, his first win in Canada 6-1, 6-3 setting up a second-round meeting with compatriot Francis Tiafoe.

Nori had earlier recovered from a loss in the Abierto de Tenis Mifel final a few days earlier to beat Brendan Nakashima 6-4, 6-4.

The world No.11 took just one hour and 13 minutes to secure victory and will face Bottic van de Zandschulp in the second round.

Jack Draper set up a meeting against Stephanos Tsitsipas with a 6-2, 6-3 win over second qualifier Hugo Gaston, while British No. 2 Dan Evans dropped a set en route to victory over Filip Krajnovic. Evans will now play Russian Andrei Rublev, who was eliminated in the first round.
