A spokesman for the Agency for the Regulation of Medicines and Medical Devices (MHRA) said: “We have come to the conclusion that cannabidiol-containing products (CBD) used for medical purposes are medicines. Medicines must be licensed for a product (marketing authorization) before they can be legally sold, supplied or advertised in the UK, except in cases. Licensed medicines must meet safety, quality and efficacy standards for public health.
“If you use CBD and if you have any questions, talk to your doctor or other healthcare professional.
“We have written to CBD sellers and manufacturers in the UK to let them know their opinion. We can provide regulatory advice to any company wishing to apply for a license.
What does the CBD mean and what is in it?
CBD is an acronym for Cannabidiol, an extract found in hemp plants.
But unlike THC, which is also found in the plant, it has no psychoactive effects on users – so it doesn’t lift you up.
It is made by extracting CBD from a cannabis plant and then diluting it with oil – such as coconut.
Can you buy it on the street?
Yes, pharmacies and health stores such as Holland and Barrett and Lloyds Pharmacy have oils, sprays and more with CBD.
These retailers will need to follow the MHRA regulations as mentioned above.
Could you be having trouble buying CBD products?
The NHS website warns users about the risks of buying CBD products online.
The section on medical cannabis states: “Some cannabis-based products can be purchased online without a prescription.
“Most of these products – even those called“ CBD Oil ”- will probably be illegal to own or supply. There is a good chance that they will contain THC and they can be unsafe to use.
It is best to buy them from reputable retailers or businesses.
Does CBD oil provide any health benefits?
According to the NHS website: “There is no guarantee that they are of good quality or are beneficial to health.”
However, other places praised the value of using CBD oil.
According to Healthline it can relieve pain and can also help people with mental health, such as anxiety.
