BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 3. Former US ambassador to Azerbaijan Robert Chekuta said that if the international community can somehow help Azerbaijan in demining the liberated territories, then those who are capable should do it. The trend.

He expressed concern for the victims of the mine explosion and hoped for their rehabilitation and speedy recovery.

“This is both a very dangerous and a very important job, but I know from my time in Azerbaijan that there is a high degree of professional competence in Azerbaijan when it comes to demining. I remember the meeting with ANAMA [now Azerbaijan’s Mine
Action Agency] during my first trip to Ganja after arriving as ambassador,” Chekuta said.

He noted that landmines and other unexploded ordnance are a problem in many countries around the world – for example in Egypt, which is perhaps the most mined country in the world, in the Western Balkans and even in parts of Western Europe.

“Governments and experts dealing with the dangers of unexploded ordnance left over from conflict need to share knowledge and experience with each other so that each can better deal with the threats posed by these deadly materials,” Cecuta noted.

The former co-chairman of the Minsk Group of the OSCE from the USA, Richard Hoagland, believes that it is time for the international community to adopt a convention on banning the use of landmines.

“The sad truth is that post-conflict demining is a long and inevitably imprecise operation, and people, people and their livestock, will continue to die. Even the most accurate mine maps do not accurately identify every mine. There are exceptionally skilled demining teams, such as the Halo Trust, but even they don’t always find every mine. Perhaps it is time for the international community to adopt a convention banning the use of landmines. It will be an uphill battle, but it’s definitely worth thinking about,” he added.
